What is predictive maintenance?

Predictive maintenance is a technique for diagnosing the point of failure of a machine component, so that said component can be replaced before a breakdown occurs.

Thus, equipment downtime is minimized and the operational life of the component is enhanced and increased.

Therefore, predictive maintenance should be understood as a series of actions and techniques aimed at diagnosing possible machinery failures and defects in the initial stages.

The objective is to prevent these errors from growing during operation and causing emergency shutdowns and downtime.

Generally, it tends to be systematic and preventive in nature; that is, a study is carried out even if the machine has not presented any problems.

Among the different signs of failure, high temperature, unfamiliar noise, ultrasound, vibration, wear particles, etc., can be observed.

And, is it effective?

For a predictive maintenance program to be effective, it must increase the reliability and operational status of the machinery while reducing production costs.

To achieve this effectiveness, it is necessary to determine the equipment to be used in said maintenance, the machines, and the required processes.

So, how do we achieve that effectiveness? The most important factors will be:

  • Understanding the different types of failures and negative effects that typically occur.
  • Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of different maintenance techniques to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Having a team of qualified technicians, as the lack of professional training and expertise is considered a negative indicator in predictive work.
  • Raising awareness of the importance of predictive maintenance compared to corrective maintenance.
