Industrial Adhesives and Their Application Throughout History

The history of adhesives and glues as a medium or technology for joining different materials has its origins in the earliest prehistoric signs. At that time, adhesives of natural origin were used to create paints and manufacture weapons. If you want to learn more about industrial adhesives and their application throughout history, continue reading.

Did glues or adhesives exist in prehistoric times?

I can tell you yes, but not as you might think. Among the different adhesive materials, they used animal blood for paints, clay as a bonding material for buildings, and others of plant origin created from birch bark.

From the 18th century onward, the study and interest in the application of adhesive materials as a bonding method began again. Subsequently, in the 20th century and with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, polymer science developed, giving rise to synthesized adhesives that enabled the creation of new designs for a wide range of industries.

The beginning of these polymers is directly related to the development of aviation and wooden plywood. Airplanes were made of wood, and it was not possible to have large pieces, limiting their possibilities.

A major change in their technology occurred with the ability to join smaller pieces of wood with a then-emerging polymer, phenol-formaldehyde (Bakelite), which solidified, first when heated and later at room temperature, using a catalyst.

Over time, adhesives would allow the replacement of riveted or bolted joints, reducing the risk of failure due to oxidation. In structural-type joints, adhesives would also have the great advantage of elasticity, allowing them to dissipate energy and providing greater adaptability to the overall structure.

ROYSE, HENKEL, and Advanced Solutions for Instant Adhesion Challenges

Trust in the best brands to offer the best service is one of ROYSE’s core values. That is why, together with Henkel, we present LOCTITE 402, the most special instant adhesive created in recent years.

We know that time is very valuable and any stoppage or failure represents a problem in production. For this reason, this new patented formula surpasses the most powerful industrial and instant adhesives on the market in thermal resistance. LOCTITE 402 helps you work more safely without compromising performance.

What advantages does LOCTITE 402 offer?

  • Increases productivity: Develops handling strength on most substrates twice as fast, and its application can be easily automated.
  • Improves reliability: Withstands heat, offering resistance to thermal aging up to 135°C.
  • Simplifies design: Provides high mechanical strength on a wide variety of materials, including difficult-to-bond substrates.
  • Improves safety: Unique patented formula with minimization of hazardous components
