WHAT IS PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE (Condition monitoring)

The predictive maintenance is an area within industrial maintenance based on the well-known CBM (Condition Based Monitoring), whose objective is to extend the useful life of assets and thereby reduce costs, by reducing unscheduled shutdowns and downtime.

Why is condition monitoring important?

Predictive maintenance identifies potential failure modes in equipment, which helps prevent breakdowns. In this way, this type of maintenance, which is more preventive, allows factories to save money.

The benefits of predictive maintenance include reduced costs, increased productivity, improved quality, and fewer unscheduled interventions.

By implementing predictive maintenance techniques, companies can significantly reduce these repair costs and carry out scheduled interventions, taking into account the reduction in downtime, material procurement with estimated time, as well as labor hours.

Benefits of condition monitoring

Predictive maintenance has existed since the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that it really began to gain traction.

A predictive maintenance program helps prevent breakdowns before they occur. It is not only used to reduce production stoppages but also to extend the useful life of assets, and to perform proactive tasks or reduce preventive measures such as alignment verification, bearing lubrication, imbalances and/or wear in the internal elements of assets, allowing maintenance to be carried out using predictive techniques.

In addition, predictive techniques can also be applied to equipment after commissioning or start-up as verification of correct installation and delivery of assets in facilities.
