Roller chains
Roller chains are a power transmission element. They are a specific variant of the general transmission chain. There are specific applications that take advantage of the roller chain’s ability to withstand tensile forces to transmit forces between two pieces of a mechanical assembly (a driving piece and a driven piece).
One specific and well-known application of roller chains is in the use of mechanical saws.
Roller chains are made up of steel plate links joined together by axles that carry rotating rollers, allowing for seamless articulation with the toothed wheels during engagement.
Roller chains can have different configurations, such as the use of multiple lines or rows of chains to transmit higher levels of power. In addition, this type of chain is also used in motorcycle transmissions and vehicle timing systems.
Roller chains are formed by the alternating union of two sets of links: inner links and outer links. The inner links consist of two inner plates or inner flanges pressed onto two bushings, on which the chain’s rollers rotate freely. The outer links are formed by outer plates or outer flanges attached to two pins that are laterally riveted after being incorporated into the inner links.
This creates an articulated assembly, consisting of a series of rollers spaced at a constant distance called pitch. This assembly is called a roller chain and allows for smooth engagement with a toothed sprocket, serving as a transmission mechanism between shafts that may be far apart, which is one of the main advantages of this type of chain.
Advantages of using roller chains in transmissions
- They can connect widely separated shafts
- They are easy to maintain
- They have a long operating life
- They can increase or decrease speed relatively easily
- They can be connected and disconnected easily
- They have virtually no elongation
- There is no slip between the driving and driven shafts
- They adapt well to heavy-duty work
