What is Servo Drive?

FESTO Controller. It is a servomotor that contains an encoder and an amplifier. These components form a feedback circuit to control position, torque, and speed.

The controller delivers the command to the servo regarding position, speed, or torque, and the servo executes this order, optionally delivering the obtained value.

Commands can be transmitted through analog signals, pulse signals, or via communication port.

Servo Drive and Industry 4.0

Currently, technological advances for servo drive applications have made them the workhorses of motion control systems due to their high performance and maximum flexibility.

Servo drives can be connected to a wide variety of motion controllers through inputs and outputs, as well as through a large number of communication networks. They can also be used through automation systems based on integrated motion controllers.

Among the different advantages of using servo drives, we find such as:

  • Avoiding production downtime
  • Vibration minimization
  • Reduction of wiring and space

The requirements that a servo drive must meet in industry are high dynamic response. For example:

  1. Brief response times
  2. An overload capacity so that high reserves are available for acceleration
  3. A wide variation range, which implies high resolution for precise positioning

The range of universal-use controllers features a state-of-the-art drive system with optimized price and size.

Festo, a provider of industrial automation components and solutions and technological training, launches CMMT to the market, the smallest range of servo drive controllers on the market for continuous connectivity.

This family of CMMT servo drive controllers from Festo is extremely compact in all its sizes, while powerful and designed to perform point-to-point and interpolated movements.

All controllers, mounted in a single module, can be installed directly in series. Their intelligent handling design and connection technique are the same across all sizes. This simplifies installation and use. Additionally, they feature optimized heat sinks, offering sufficient cooling.

Safe, compact, precise, and simple to configure.

This latest solution features safety functions integrated into the servo drive controller, motor, and shaft with automatic motor disconnection and rapid stop. Its compact design requires half the mounting space and enables precise regulation of rotation, speed, and position to deliver exact movements.

CMMT commissioning is completed in just a few minutes, intuitively and in few steps. This is achieved through Festo Automation Suite, free software that acts as the central hub of the Festo Automation Platform and is constantly updated. This platform includes multiple new products and solutions, from mechanics to the automation market.

CMMT-AS and CMMT-ST

Within Festo’s new CMMT controller range, you will find these two types adapted to your needs.

CMMT-AS

The CMMT-AS controller is perfect for different Ethernet-based systems and can be integrated directly into system environments from different controller manufacturers.

If we have to highlight something about this Festo controller, it is its universal use for PM synchronous servomotors up to 6000W continuous power and compatible with EMMT-AS, EMME-AS, EMMB-AS, and EMMS-AS motor series, as well as with motors from other manufacturers.

It also features single-phase/three-phase connection to 230/400V mains, integrated mains filter and braking resistor, with connection option for external braking resistor.

CMMT-ST

For its part, the CMMT-ST is ideal for continuous power demands up to 300W.

It brings the advantages of servomotor control to low-footprint motors, both servomotors and stepper motors.

It requires less cooling than the CMMT-AS model, has a capacity of 2.5 kW, and, furthermore, thanks to its compact design, requires half the mounting space.
